Torque & Cleans in Westworth Village
Electrical connections loosen slowly as metal heats and cools. A torque and clean brings each lug and breaker terminal in your panel back to the manufacturer's rated tightness, removes the dust that holds heat, and catches small problems while they are still small.

Quiet Maintenance for the Box That Feeds Your Home
Every circuit in your home passes through a handful of screw terminals in the electrical panel. When those terminals are tight and clean, current flows with little resistance. When one works loose, it starts to run warm, the metal oxidizes, and resistance climbs. That cycle is one of the more common starting points for scorched breakers and melted insulation.
A torque and clean is the routine care that interrupts it. We shut the panel down safely, clean it, and use a calibrated torque screwdriver to set each connection to the value printed on the breaker or panel label. Not tighter, which can crack a terminal or crush a conductor. Not looser, which defeats the purpose.
It suits homes with panels that have never been opened since installation, panels in hot garages or on exterior walls, and anyone who wants a clear picture of their equipment before adding a large load like an EV charger or a generator.
What the Visit Covers
- Safe shutdown and verification
- We turn off the main, then test with a meter to confirm the bus and branch terminals are dead before any tool goes in. The service conductors feeding the main stay live unless the utility disconnects them, so we treat that area accordingly.
- Cleaning the enclosure
- Dust, insect debris and the occasional wasp nest come out with a nonconductive brush and vacuum. Buildup traps heat and can hold moisture, so a clean enclosure runs cooler.
- Torque to manufacturer spec
- Breaker terminals, neutral and ground bars, and main lugs where accessible are set with a calibrated torque driver. We read the values from the labels on your equipment rather than guessing.
- Visual inspection of every conductor
- We look for discolored insulation, pitted or corroded terminals, doubled-up wires under a single screw and aluminum conductors without the right compound or rated terminal.
- Photos and written findings
- You get photos of anything worth noting and a plain explanation of what it means. If something needs repair, we price it separately and you decide.
Signs Your Panel Is Due for Attention
A breaker that feels warm
A breaker handle that is warm to the touch, or noticeably warmer than its neighbors, often points to a loose or corroding connection behind it.
Buzzing or crackling
Panels should be nearly silent. A steady hum or intermittent crackle can mean current is arcing across a poor connection.
Lights that dim under load
If lights dip when the air conditioner or dryer starts, a loose neutral or main connection may be part of the cause.
Years since anyone looked inside
Most panels are closed up at installation and never opened again. Summer heat in a garage or on a south-facing wall works connections loose faster than a cool interior closet would.
A faint burnt or plastic smell
Any odor near the panel deserves a prompt look. Turn off the affected circuit if you can identify it, and call us to book a visit.
What Shapes the Cost
A torque and clean is a defined maintenance task, so most of the price comes down to how much equipment there is and how easy it is to reach. We give you the price by phone or on site before any work starts, and any repairs we find are quoted separately.
Number of panels
A home with a main panel and one or more subpanels, such as a detached garage or workshop, takes longer than a single panel.
Panel size and circuit count
More breakers means more terminals to clean and torque. A crowded panel with tandem breakers also takes more care to work through.
Location and access
An exterior panel behind landscaping or a cramped closet adds time compared with an open garage wall.
Condition on opening
Heavy debris, rodent nesting or corrosion that needs extra cleaning can add to the visit. Anything beyond cleaning is priced as a separate repair.
How a Torque and Clean Runs on the Day
- 1
Plan the shutdown with you
The whole home loses power while we work, usually for part of a morning or afternoon. We talk through refrigerators, medical devices, home offices and anything that needs a controlled restart before we arrive.
- 2
Record before we touch
We photograph the panel as found and note any breakers that were tripped or labeled unclearly. That gives you a before-and-after record.
- 3
De-energize, test, clean and torque
Main off, meter test, then cleaning and torquing terminal by terminal. Anything we see that needs more than tightening is set aside for discussion rather than handled on the spot.
- 4
Restore power carefully
We reinstall the cover, bring the main back on, then restore branch circuits in sequence and confirm each one is working.
- 5
Walk you through the findings
We show you the photos, explain what looked healthy and what did not, and leave you with written notes for your records.

What People Ask About Panel Maintenance
How often does a panel need this service?
Every few years suits most homes, and sooner if the panel lives in a hot spot or has never been serviced. It is also a good idea before you add a big new load. After the first visit, we can recommend a schedule based on what we found.
Is the power off while you work?
Yes. Safe work means the panel is completely de-energized, so the whole house is without power for the visit. We agree on the timing with you and bring circuits back in order once we are done.
Could I tighten the terminals on my own?
We would not recommend it. The service conductors remain energized even with the main breaker off. Too much force can crack a breaker terminal or damage a wire, and too little leaves it loose. The rated torque values matter, and hitting them takes a calibrated tool.
What if you find a bad breaker or scorched wire?
We pause, take photos and walk you through it. If turning the power back on would be unsafe, we say so directly. If not, we quote the repair separately through our electrical repair service, and nothing gets replaced unless you approve it.
Does this replace a panel upgrade?
No. This service looks after the panel you have now. If it is too small, outdated or failing, we will tell you, and our panel upgrades page covers what a replacement involves.
